we have centurylink internet right now and its remarkably reliable.  we've lived here for about 7 years and i can remember one, maybe two times it went out for a noticable length of time.  really like it for my wife who works from home.  the downside is, it's dsl, and we just got bumped up to 10mbps d/l, the fastest speed they offer.  so, from 4am-12pm, its fine for my wifes medical coding, when there is little draw on the network, but if i stay home from work andwant to watch netflix or something it slows her down and i get yelled at. lame.  also, when we want to watch tv at night, we average only 2mbps or so.  assuming this is a cumulative draw through the whole nieghborhood?  we dont do anything fancy really, just streaming which i get, eats bandwidth, but one device streaming and buffering sucks.
so they are rebuilding our road, and midco came through and laid all new ductwork and im told thier network is all fiber.  now i assume its not fiber from the pole to the house, but if and when the tech becomes available to have true fiber point to point thatd be sweet.  any how, they offer 150 mbps for about 10 bucks more.
so, excited about that, the guy is coming on friday.  said it might take 3 hours.  i really dont see how it could other than we only have phone cable in the walls, and i need to have cable-cable, or fiber if thats actually how they do it, run straight to the modem, which will need to be up in my wifes office.  she has to be wired to the internet for security reasons i'd assume, but mainly because i cant find a wifi usb adapter that doesnt require admin access on her work pc to use.
so its a pain, but to speed up the process i think i will try to run a duct from the service drop on the outside of the house, in, up to the attic, and down into the existing phone box in her office.  its 90 degrees today so the attic will suck, but i think it should be somewhat piece of cakey.  never looked into doing it this way, in the past i always fished wires with string and tape and its a frustrating mess. i figure this way i'll get some sort of flexible duct thats around an inch in diameter so it'll be easy to find in the wallspace between the studs through the openings for the junction boxes.  ill have to start in the attic on above where it comes in, and drop a string down to the box on the outside of the house, but once i pull that up, its a matter of drilling one hole above the office box and feeding it through there, then done with hot attic.
the whole point is to speed up installation on friday, and to have an unobstructed line straight to the modem.  ill have to put some expando foam around it so mice cant use it as a super highway too though.
