im a lazy, entitled, holier than though armchair activist, and i dont like a lot of things that go on around us, and like most fat white americans, i want to write a check and make it go away.
ill use the example of the war going on in yemen.  i dont even know what it really is, it sounds like a saudi invasion to me, this kid from yemen at my work gave a talk and tried to explain it, but from his talk and what ive read online, it sounds like a hostile invasion.  i think saudi arabia wants to kill anyone who would be able to oppose, then move in and take all their land and use their oceanfront property to control the persian gulf.  i think.  im sure there is some religious nonsence and ethnic cleansing sprinkled in there, but lets keep this simple.
also, as with most wars, they are cutting off trade and supplies and basic essentials to the people of yemen. so they are hungry, thristy,  and have no basic healthcare.  from what i gather the USA is buying oil from the saudis, then selling weapons, a fact that our commander in chief openly pats himself on the back for, to saudi arabia.  billions of dollars in weapons.  the saudis take those weapons and bomb the yemenis into kingdom come.  so, by proxy I am funding the obliteration of the yemeni people.  not willingly,  but im a taxpayer so, like it or not, i have a vested interest in the dealings of a nation.  so what?
so after this dude came and spoke at my work about yemen getting jacked, i wanted to do what i do, write a check, and throw my hands in the air and proclaim ive done all i could to help.  heres the rub. in writing a check to buy aid for starving war torn parts of yemen, am i not opposing the force that my own government supports?  is that treason? is it domestic terrorism?  is the friend the enemy of my friend's friends frenemy?  its muddy to say the least.
also, i want to be charitable, but i also like to be frugal, so if i am paying with my left hand to fund the saudi bombing of yemen through oil subsidies and trade sanctions, what sense does it make to support the people of yemen with the right?  sometimes business get between a rock and a hard place.
ideally, id like to just take the cash im unwillingly funneling into the destruction of yemen and just give it to them to feed thier babies and heal thier sick.
